Is hair loss normal in autumn?
Teresa de Miguel Miró
Yes, but that doesn't mean you have to resign yourself to it. If your hair is strong and nourished, and your scalp is in perfect condition, hair loss in autumn—this time of year—can remain just that: a seasonal "scary" like the one that occurs in spring. The problem begins when hair is damaged , dry, and brittle, or when the scalp's microcirculation isn't functioning properly. In this scenario, telogen effluvium can become chronic and eventually lead to alopecia.
Before you panic, you should know some facts that will surely put your mind at ease, even if you find a clump of hair in your brush every morning. An adult woman has between 100,000 and 150,000 follicles responsible for hair growth on her scalp. The density varies. When we are born, we have no less than 1,000 follicles per cm², but this number decreases with age, reaching about 250 per cm² around age 40.
Another aspect that must be clearly understood is that each follicle grows independently of those surrounding it. Their development is not synchronous, and each one must complete the three phases that make up each hair growth cycle, which lasts approximately 10 years.
- Anagen : During the anagen phase - which lasts between two and eight years - hair grows continuously at a rate of one centimeter per month.
- Catagen : the next phase is catagen, and in this phase the hair takes a well-deserved rest of between one and one and a half months.
- Telogen : The third one is the most frightening; during the telogen phase, the hair begins to detach and fall out until two or three months later a new cycle begins.
But remember! We're talking about a specific follicle that doesn't necessarily follow the same rhythm as the other 150,000. Normally, there's always about 15% of the hair in the shedding phase.
WHAT PRODUCTS SHOULD I USE FOR HAIR CARE?
Every head of hair is unique, and the first step is to accurately identify your hair type and its needs . You should know that, generally speaking, shampoo should be specifically formulated for your hair type (oily, dry, normal, or—the always difficult-to-manage—combination with oily roots and dry ends).
Once you've chosen the most suitable shampoo for your needs, it's time to prioritize and use conditioners , masks , or pre-shampoo treatments that address your most pressing concerns. Lack of shine, split ends, lack of volume, brittleness, frizz…?
And don't forget your scalp!
Exfoliants , oils , ampoules , and other treatments designed for this 'peculiar' skin are not just a fad but a real necessity. Remember that the scalp is the foundation for healthy hair, and it's essential to keep it free of impurities, detoxified, and with optimal circulation to ensure a balanced scalp.
We give you some ideas based on the different hair types and their problems regarding hair loss in autumn:
YOUR HAIR LOSS WASHING PROGRAM FOR AUTUMN
Dyed or colored hair? When you dye your hair, it becomes drier and more brittle, so in addition to strengthening it to prevent breakage, it's advisable to use a conditioner that seals the cuticle well to prevent pigment loss and keep the color vibrant for longer.
Sachajuan Intensive Repair Conditioner.
- This is the ideal intensive repair conditioner for damaged, porous, dry, or sun-exposed hair. The Ocean Silk Technology formula is a nourishing blend of seaweed extracts rich in minerals and proteins that provide deep nourishment to the hair. These components are essential for keeping hair hydrated, full-bodied, shiny, and with sealed cuticles.
Thick and frizzy? Tame it and use products that make detangling easier and prevent unsightly frizz.
Baume Capillaire de Biologique Recherche.
- A triple action treatment that detangles hair, smooths it and seals the cuticle, while also providing extra shine and flexibility to the hair.
As you know, we at Beldon know that hair is an extension of the face, and that is why we must pay it the same attention.
