Basic care for the eye contour
Marta Cámara
Our eyes have become our only expressive reference point in a face hidden by masks. Our gaze not only conveys emotions; the fragile skin surrounding it also reveals information about our health and lifestyle. That's why we're going to talk about basic eye contour care, to achieve what we all seek: a refreshed look with a rested expression.

The vulnerability of the skin around our eyes stems from its thinness: at just 0.5 millimeters thick, it is 5 to 10 times less than the skin on the rest of the face. Despite having fewer sebaceous glands and being subject to almost constant mechanical movement, it is nevertheless exposed to the same exposome : solar radiation, tobacco smoke, cold, pollution, and so on.
In other words, under identical adverse conditions, the periorbital area works harder and with fewer of its own defenses. All these causal factors contribute to its loss of density and elasticity, and therefore, to its tendency to show signs of premature aging. This is without even considering additional concerns, such as bags and dark circles under the eyes, which we will address here .
EYE CONTOUR ROUTINE: MAXIMUM GENTLENESS
In this context of fragility, it is essential to implement an exquisite care routine, both in terms of the methods—movements, massages, materials—and the substance, ensuring that we use the active ingredients and textures adapted to our needs, something that can only be achieved after a personalized diagnosis.

1. A Gentle Cleanse . We begin by discussing basic eye contour care with the essentials, as always: hygiene. We will only use specific, extra-gentle yet effective cleansers that dissolve all types of makeup on contact, without rubbing. Medik8 Eyes & Lips Micellar Cleanse has perfected a three-phase micellar technology that incorporates oils for complete cleansing in a single step. Furthermore, its addition of Vitamin B5, Hyaluronic Acid, Chamomile, and Cornflower provides extra care to restore and soothe.
2. Moisturize and nourish : Using the right active ingredients is always the foundation of a successful, customized skincare routine. In the periocular area, specifically, “less is more”; but also, “better is better.” Because products designed for this area, while having a lighter texture, are more readily absorbed topically; therefore, we must ensure we are choosing the right ones.
The product should always be applied in small dabs, again avoiding pulling or dragging.

3. Protect : During the day, sun protection is essential. The combination of Antioxidants + Vitamin C + Sunscreen exemplifies the optimal use of anti-aging cosmetics . Vitamin C is also a perfect ally in combating dark circles because, contrary to popular belief, despite being highly unstable and photosensitive (meaning it is inactivated by sunlight), it is not photosensitizing: it does not make our skin more vulnerable to radiation than it already is. On the contrary, if it is well-formulated and combined with antioxidants such as Vitamin E or Ferulic Acid, it protects the skin by helping to reverse the production of free oxygen radicals.
Both the eye contour and the upper part of the cheekbones suffer from the constant friction of the mask's edges and fastening straps. A sunscreen stick that we can carry with us everywhere will allow us to reapply the product as often as necessary.
4. Specific care : Fatigue caused by lack of sleep and/or prolonged exposure to blue light from electronic screens, among other triggers, wreaks havoc on the eye contour, causing puffiness, dark circles, and a general look of weariness. To reduce inflammation and restore freshness, we can turn to very effective traditional remedies: from applying slices of cold cucumber, rich in vitamin E (D-alpha tocopherol, one of the most powerful anti-wrinkle agents nature offers), to cotton pads moistened with a cold chamomile infusion. After all, what didn't our grandmothers already know!

5. The benefits of self-massage . Often overlooked among basic eye contour care, self-massage is an extraordinary tool that achieves its best results precisely in an edematous area like this. Hayo'u has distilled centuries of Eastern wisdom into a method with simple and pleasant self-massage techniques that gently drain and reduce inflammation in the tissues while enhancing the penetration of active ingredients, resulting in calm, detoxified, and radiant skin.

In our post "Solutions for Bags and Dark Circles," we delve into understanding their causes and finding effective solutions. However, it's worth noting that regularly following these basic eye contour care routines will significantly reduce the appearance of both, as their origin lies in vascular and inflammatory factors that will improve considerably with this simple daily routine.
